Sidewalk
replacement in Victory – summer 2015
Many Victory residents may have noticed
markings on their public sidewalks, placed there by Minneapolis Public Works
this past summer or fall. These markings indicate sidewalk panels that are in
need of replacement. Sidewalks in most of the neighborhood are scheduled for
replacement next summer. In fact all sidewalks in the neighborhood north of
Dowling, east of Xerxes, south of Victory Memorial Drive and west of Penn have
been inspected and marked for replacement in 2015.
The Sidewalk Inspections Office of Public
Works inspects all city sidewalks on approximately a 10-year cycle. Prior to
the construction season, Sidewalk Inspections selects and inspects neighborhood
areas for the next year’s sidewalk repair work. Sidewalk inspectors examine
every section of public sidewalk within that year’s defined neighborhood areas
to determine which sections require replacement.
The sidewalk inspector looks for:
• Damage that
could cause pedestrians to fall
• Damage that
could impede wheel-chair users and other disabled pedestrians
• Common
defects like breaks, unevenness, and projecting or settled sections
By ordinance, Minneapolis requires that
property owners build and maintain the public sidewalks along city streets
(City Charter, Chapter 8, sections 12 and 13). Public sidewalks are necessary
in order to provide safe passage for pedestrians, including wheel-chair and
other disabled users. Sidewalks also help maintain strong neighborhoods and
prevent degradation of green space. Since it is the homeowners’ responsibility
to maintain the public sidewalks adjacent to their property, property owners
will be assessed for sidewalk replacement.
To learn more
and to find out what your assessment may be attend the January 28 Victory
Neighborhood Meeting. Public Works Inspector Dan Bauer will be on hand to let
us know when we can expect the work to be done and what we can expect in the
way of assessment.
