On February 9, theatre patrons were thoughtful as they left Workhouse Theatre Co.’s Reader’s Theatre presentation of Love Letters, by A. R. Gurney. It was a love story where the timing never quite worked out between Republican senator Andy Ladd, played by Dan Hylton, and reckless artist Melissa Gardner, played by Shanan Wexler (both pictured).
Audience members nodded affectionately – sometimes wistfully – as threads of their own memories became interwoven with those being performed onstage. “There is something deep in this script to which each of us can relate,” notes director Michael Venske, “I imagine it’s hard not to think of someone in your life or from your past that reminds you of either an ‘Andy’ or a ‘Melissa.’”
Theatregoers took advantage of the 15 percent discount offered by Papa’s Pizza and Pasta to enjoy a Night Out in Camden just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Workhouse Theatre Company will bring the March installation of their Reader’s Theatre Series “in like a lion” with Jean Paul Sartre’s No Exit, an existential comedy about the human condition. In the play, three people are condemned to antagonize one another in a world where there are neither eyelids nor exits. There are no masked torturers, no scalding flames, just garish furniture (arranged at uncomfortable angles) and annoying roommates to plague one another for all eternity. According to Sartre, “Hell is other people!”
No Exit will be performed at The Warren, An Artists Habitat (4400 Osseo Rd.) on March 9, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $3. Patrons can look forward to a cameo appearance onstage from Duane Atter, Camden resident and Managing Director of The Warren. For info/tickets, email info@workhousetheatre.org.
