Milo Fine, Davu Seru and Charles Gillett, with Gondwana at the Historic Capri Theater
By: Jeanne Fish 02/01/2010
Since 1969 Northsider Milo Fine has been taking music "out there" with his unique style of free jazz and improvised music. On Thursday, February 11 at the Capri you'll find Milo in an all-too-rare public appearance playing a concert grand piano, and in the company of two of his most stalwart cohorts of the last decade - percussionist Davu Seru, who was also raised on the Northside, and Charles Gillett on guitar. Each of these musicians has an incredible track record of jazz improvisation, and long-standing musical relationships with other veteran musicians of the creative music community. Fine "occupies a prematurely discarded modernist space...to insulate from both commercial and political influences" - Keith Harris, City Pages.
Opening the night is the jazz quintet Gondwana, with Rod Gordon carrying the baton of his late brother Drew, performing Drew's compositions with his former band. In doing so, Gondwana brings back together Rod and Max Ray who performed together in the wildly popular 1980s Twin Tone Records band The Wallets. In addition to Rod and Max, Gondwana features Rochelle Becker on baritone sax, Jerry Gorman on upright bass and Larry Hennessy on drums. Their originals "sound as if Monk were alive and playing TV-show themes ... File under freestyle, then slither awhile" - Jim Meyer, Minneapolis Star Tribune.
