The Workhouse Theatre opens Apartment 3A for a 10-show run beginning on Friday, February 5 at The Warren: An Artist Habitat.
"This play deals with themes that I think all of us struggle with from time to time," explains Artistic Director Jeff Redman. "A sense of meaning, love and faith. It was the perfect show to put in our season, especially at this time in our country."
Described by the New York Times as, "...a modest romantic comedy that recalls early Neil Simon sprinkled with metaphysics," Apartment 3A features a television employee named Annie who has lost her faith in God, men, and even (gasp!) PBS. Reeling from the loss of what she thought was the love of her life, Annie searches for a reason to hope again with a mysterious next-door neighbor who teaches her what it truly means to be in love forever.
The play is written by actor and quirky independent film producer/writer Jeff Daniels who, unbeknownst to the general movie-going public, is an accomplished playwright with 12 plays to his credit, most of them having been performed at his hometown Purple Rose Theater. "Daniels' use of humor catches you at just the right moment and his sense of humanity is very refined for someone who starred in Dumb and Dumber," says Redman.
Apartment 3A comes on the heels of a successful January installment of Workhouse Theatre's Shakespeare Second Sunday Socials. Diane Mountford, a Camden resident and Artistic Director of the Minnesota Shakespeare Project, is directing shows for the series. Says Redman, "It is exciting to see more and more of our audience members bring their favorite dish to share while watching some of the Twin Cities top actors read classic Shakespeare plays."
In addition to encouraging attendance for upcoming shows, Workhouse Theatre is developing an all-Camden board. Having experienced a tremendous amount of success in the five years of their existence, they are seeking committed individuals with a belief in the value of arts in their community to help them grow and sustain the company into their sixth year and beyond.
That future begins with Apartment 3A. Specific performance dates are February 5-6, 8, 11-13, and 18-21; with shows at 7:30 p.m. each night except for the final show on February 21, which is a 2 p.m. matinee. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door ($8/$10 students/seniors), though special discounted nights are available. Visit www.workhousetheatre.org or call 612-386-5763 for more details.
