Ska with a Camden connection
By: Staff 08/01/2007
The Twin Cities band Skaliticians play a mixture of ska, rock, reggae and Latin music sung both in English and Spanish. Formed in early 2007, Skaliticians have been performing around town, primarily at the Red Sea Bar and Congas Latino bistro in downtown Minneapolis, and will perform at a National Night Out block party on August 7. Ska is characterized by a blending of Jamaican folk and American rhythm and blues, distinguishable by its scratch-like tempo and jazz-like horn riffs.
The percussion duties are handled by Victory resident Jeff Bowback. Out of curiosity, he accepted an invitation from the band to audition in late December and was quickly drawn in by the good humor and camaraderie of guitarist Steve Sanders, bassist Jose Valencia, and trumpet player Rob Kaszubowski. “It was really not what I expected” he said. “Originally I’d set out to hook up with a top 40 cover band but sometimes taking chances and letting life take you where it may can often lead to some fun and surprising outcomes.”
Skaliticians’ main priority is an energetic show that keeps the people dancing. “We’re all about fun music with good friends enjoying good times. That for us is the big payoff.” For info visit www.myspace.com/skaliticians
