In the middle of a cold, grey winter, you’re invited to “think summer!” by getting your tickets now for Camden Music School’s (CMS) scholarship FUNdraiser, The Summer Lovin’ Sing-Along Show, at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 26 at the Capri Theater, 2027 West Broadway.
This is the 5th annual CMS spring sing-along for music scholarships and once again the audience is the star of the show, singing summer hits from the ‘60s to the ‘80s, from Hello Muddah to My Sharona and more. All song lyrics will be projected on-screen. All singing styles and abilities and “just listeners” are welcome. In addition, there will be a fast-paced live auction mid-show.
For decades, the songs of summer would emerge following a pattern as predictable as the beach tide. Pop radio would get them rolling, then the high school prom and spring break road trips would give those tunes even more play. By the time school let out for the summer, the songs — inevitably ones with a big, playful beat and an irresistible hook—would blare from car dashboards and transistor radios everywhere.
The incomparable Dan Chouinard is the host of the show. Chouinard, who hosts monthly sing-alongs at the Loring Park Rec Center, says group singing is great for the soul.
“There’s no place I’d rather be than with a group of people who want to sing together. Our thorniest issues–the deficit, health care, taxation, immigration, snow emergency etiquette–would all be met with greater civility if we all spent more time singing,” said Chouinard.
Chouinard has enlisted top Twin Cities musicians as songleaders for the evening including T. Mychael Rambo, Austene Van, Prudence Johnson, Katy Hays and Gary Rue.
