Second Saturdays presents…West African drumming with “The Family”
By: Janet Zahn 02/01/2008
Experience the rhythms and history of West African drumming with “The Family” on Saturday, February 9 from 3 to 4 p.m. at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, 3751 Sheridan.
Onayemi Ogunkoye, his sister Josephine, and grand niece Imani invite you to listen, clap and sing along with them as they perform and inform us about West African rhythms and songs that originated in the ancient Mali empire. They’ll be playing the djembe and dunun drums.
The group’s leader, Onayemi Ogunkoye, moved to Minneapolis from Kansas City where he played in the Djembe Jazz Collective, among other musical endeavors. In Minneapolis he plays Afro/Cuban/ Latin jazz with Batak, and in the West African folk group, Incognita. He also teaches K-6 music at the Emily O. Goodridge-Grey Charter School.
A reception featuring good cookies, coffee and conversation follows the concert. The event is free, though we will “pass the hat” for the musicians. This will be a moving hour of music. Come, sing, clap and enjoy!
