The arts have a home in North Minneapolis

It’s been four years since we began introducing you to Camden Artists but this month, I want to take you on a little side trip. I’d like to introduce you to places where the arts happen in Camden, and all over the Northside.
Let’s begin our tour on 44th and Penn at The Warren, a lovely gallery space run by Victory resident Duane Atter, featuring work by mostly Northside artists. The Workhouse Theatre found a great new home in The Warren as well, and just completed a hugely successful show on their new full stage. Up to Dowling and Sheridan is the Camden Music School offering a variety of music lessons and free concerts every month. Not to be missed is the Camden Gateway Sculpture Garden on 42nd and Lyndale that is good enough to be included in the City’s Public Art Guide!
We’re going south now to Penn and Broadway and the Bean Scene coffee shop with revolving art exhibits and live music. Across Penn is the Hollywood School of Dance and a couple blocks east is the Capri Theater with free kids’ movies on Saturdays and movies for teens on Fridays. And for us grown-ups, the Live at the Capri series with talents like Dennis Spears and Debbie Duncan! The Capri is also home to the Northside Arts Collective providing support and opportunities for artists and the community.
East now to Emerson where you find bubbles coming from the roof of Juxtaposition Arts, a youth art center, and the giant artwork on the side of the new 1101 Building by Victory resident Chris Harrison. A little further down across I94 on 2nd Street you find handmade tiles at Mercury Mosaics and summer classes in full swing at the Lundstrum Center for Performing Arts behind the Beehive.
Now jump over to Penn and Plymouth for a self-guided art tour of NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center and especially Convergance in the main lobby by Henry Art Teacher Seexeng Lee. West two blocks to Russell is Homewood Studios with continuous exhibitions, studio space and classes and next door is Plymouth Avenue Art Studios with art classes for children.
Besides all these public venues, there are murals, sculptures and gardens tucked all over and will be on a map in the next Northside Arts Collective Art & Culture Resource Catalog. The arts have a home in North Minneapolis! Get out and support the arts! Get info from the Northside Arts Collective at www.nacarts.org or 612-643-2050.
