George the Barber, 3904 Thomas, is back in business — he’s been operating at the site for 52 years, but took a leave of absence while in the hospital for six months and three months recuperating. George Hardinger opened his Camden barbershop in 1955; he just reopened his shop two months ago. New hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. He has deep roots in the community, all his kids went through school here, and has always had a fine relationship with the community — he wants folks to know he’s back!
Kingsley Commons held an open house August 16 at their new site, 4550 Humboldt. It’s the state’s first multi-housing development specifically designed and built for people living with multiple sclerosis and one of only three such developments in the nation. The residence offers people with MS a way to help manage life with a disability, remain independent and integrated into community life. For info visit http://www.kingsleycommons.org/.
On August 23 a public event celebrating the return of 1101 West Broadway to the Northside featured entertainment, food and refreshments by 1101 West Broadway tenants—The Bean Scene, City-County Federal Credit Union and Emerge Community Development. The century-old building at Emerson and West Broadway had been vacant and shuttered for the better part of a decade before a collaboration of partners—Emerge/Pillsbury United Communities, Ackerberg Group, City-County Federal Credit Union, Welsh Companies and the City of Minneapolis—redeveloped the building and restored a vibrancy at the corner with an array of retail and social services that respond to the needs of the community.
