Cityview School to close

inneapolis Public Schools Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson has recommended to the school board that Cityview School be closed. The K-5 portion of the school would close at the end of this school year and the middle school (6-8) portion would be phased out one grade at a time over three years. Last spring, Cityview was identified by the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) as one of 34 "persistently low achieving schools" in the state. Both MDE and No Child Left Behind (NCLB) require that the school district restructure the school. Current K-4 students can choose to go to another school in their attendance area. The 5-7 students would remain at Cityview as the middle school program is phased out. This recommendation will need to be voted on by the board of education before it becomes final.
The Minneapolis Public Schools will be opening a district authorized K-5 charter school, the Minnesota School of Science, in the Cityview building next fall. The district will also be opening the Pierre Bottineau School next fall. It will be a self-governed, French language immersion school and will be housed in the Jordan Park school building. It will start as a K-1 school and grow to a K-5 program over five years.
