The navigation channel of the Mississippi River was closed for a couple days in mid-October while contractors lifted the northern Lowry Avenue Bridge edge girder into place.
The precast edge girders frame what will eventually be the north and south bridge deck of the new Lowry Avenue Bridge. Each edge girder is approximately 155 feet long and weighs one million pounds. This installation forms the link between the easterly and westerly shore of the Mississippi River.
Phase I of the replacement project — the bridge over the Mississippi River — is currently underway. Phase II of the replacement project — construction over the Canadian Pacific Railroad — commenced in April 2011. The entire Lowry Avenue Bridge is scheduled for completion by late summer 2012.
