I think we have our priorities out of whack here in Minnesota. The politicians are going to charge us an additional sales tax to build a sports stadium but can’t fund Webber Library or get more police and firefighters on the street. How low have we gotten as a society, when we elect politicians who fund sports stadiums but let neighborhood libraries and schools close and cause our police and fire departments to charge fees to make ends meet?
We need to start holding elected officials accountable! We’ve had three Northside schools close, with two more on the chopping block, and our Webber Library is most likely going to close. Lord knows we don’t have enough police to answer 911 calls let alone just walk beats and get to know the communities, and of course the fire department is not as fully funded, as it should be. But we are going to get two new stadiums in Minneapolis and most likely another one in Blaine.
When you talk to candidates for elected office, ask where their priorities are and if they are incumbents, check to see what they’ve actually done and then vote accordingly. Police and fire protection, community schools and community libraries should be a priority in any community. I for one don’t mind paying taxes for those things instead of for stadiums or for tax breaks for rich or the big business supporters of the politicians.
Get out and vote in November, and let the politicians know you care about our community!
