Showing the importance of reading
By: Kathleen Stratton 12/01/2014
On October 21 the
Minnesota Reading Corps sponsored an event at Jenny Lind Elementary. Volunteers
came to read to the kids in some of the classrooms for one-half hour that
morning. They each read a story to the students, and then told something about
themselves and their involvement in our community.
Jenny Lind was
fortunate to host former Mayor R.T. Rybak, Congressman Keith Ellison, incoming
School Board Member Don Samuels, an Al Franken staff member, two Webber and
North Regional librarians, a local firefighter, a retired Mpls Public Schools
principal and a dedicated Jenny Lind volunteer.
Mayor Rybak brought one
of his favorite books to read, The Tin
Forest. Keith Ellison was excited to read House Mouse, Senate Mouse, one of his favorites. All these dedicated
community members demonstrated the importance and pleasure of reading.
Minnesota Reading
Corps’ mission is to have every third grader reading at the appropriate level,
so they can “read to learn” by fourth grade and beyond. For more info contact Kathleen
